Blood tests
| Test | Food and drink | Also remember |
|---|---|---|
| Fasting blood sugar | Nothing except plain water for 8 to 12 hours. An overnight fast is best. | Take diabetes tablets and mealtime insulin only after the sample, with breakfast. Take long-acting insulin at its usual time. No tea, coffee, chewing gum, smoking or exercise during the fast. |
| Sugar after a meal | Eat your usual meal. The sample is taken exactly 2 hours after the first bite. | Take your usual diabetes medicines with that meal. Nothing more to eat until the sample. |
| HbA1c | No fasting. Any time of day. | |
| Thyroid tests | No fasting needed. | If you take a thyroid tablet, give the sample before that day's tablet. Stop biotin (hair and nail vitamins) for 2 days before. |
| Cholesterol (lipid profile) | Fasting is usually not essential. Fast 8 to 12 hours if your doctor wrote fasting, if it is done with a fasting sugar, or if your triglycerides are high. | |
| Blood count, kidney, liver, vitamin D, B12 | No fasting needed. |

| Routine or culture | A midstream sample. See samples at home. | |
| 24-hour urine | See the 24-hour urine sheet. |
