Tdap and Td vaccination for adults

Most Indian adults have had tetanus toxoid but never the pertussis component. One catch-up dose fixes that, then a booster every ten years.

Who this is recommended for

  • Every adult who has never had a Tdap dose, at any age
  • Every pregnancy, ideally between 27 and 36 weeks
  • Adults in contact with young infants
  • Anyone with a wound whose vaccination history is incomplete or unknown

Schedule

One Tdap dose, then a Td or Tdap booster every ten years. If your primary childhood series is unknown, a three-dose catch-up schedule is used.

Timing

Any time. There is no minimum interval required after a previous tetanus toxoid dose before the first Tdap.

What is available, and what we use

Adacel
Sanofi

These two are clinically interchangeable for adults. Plain tetanus toxoid is very much cheaper but does not cover pertussis, which is the reason for giving Tdap at all.

Product names and prices are listed so you know what you are being given and what it costs. They are for identification only and do not constitute a recommendation of any manufacturer. Prices shown are the manufacturer's maximum retail price per dose as at 12 August 2026; manufacturers and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority revise these from time to time, and your actual cost is confirmed before anything is administered.

What we will not gloss over

  • Local soreness is common. Tell us if a previous tetanus-containing dose caused a severe local reaction.

Not sure what else you are missing?

Most adults are missing two or three. Two questions will tell you which to raise.
