Caspian Healthcare › Obesity › Our approach
Obesity medicine at Caspian is run as a long term clinical service, in the same way the diabetes and thyroid clinics are run. It is assessment, a plan, and regular review. It is not a package and there is nothing to buy at the door.
| Measure | Why it is there |
|---|---|
| Weight | The obvious one, and the least informative on its own. Useful as a trend across months, not week to week. |
| Waist circumference | The number that tracks visceral fat, which is the fat that causes the damage. In Indians this often improves faster than weight does. |
| Body composition | Fat mass against lean mass. The whole objective is to move one down while holding the other. A scale cannot tell you which one you are losing. |
| Blood pressure | Frequently improves early, and often means an existing tablet needs reducing rather than continuing. |
| Capillary glucose | Done for every patient and every attender who walks in, at no charge. It is how we find the diabetes nobody knew about. |
| What you are actually eating and doing | Asked without judgement, because the answer only helps if it is true. |
A lot of people avoid doctors because of how they have been spoken to about their weight. If being weighed is difficult, say so and we will do it facing away from the display, or record it without discussing the number. It is a measurement, not a verdict, and it is not a moral document.
Where it is clinically indicated, treatment may include prescription medicine. Any prescription is decided by the doctor after an individual assessment, and is not available without a consultation. What is appropriate depends on what your assessment shows, what else you take, whether you are planning a pregnancy, what your liver and kidneys are doing, and what you can sustain. Those are conversations for the room, not for a webpage.
What we can say here is the principle we work to: a treatment you can continue beats a better treatment you will have to stop. Weight regain after stopping is well documented and substantial. Starting something for four months that you cannot afford for twenty-four buys you the cost and the regain and very little that lasts. We would rather have that conversation at the first visit.
Which medicines are licensed in India, which brands carry each molecule, how each one is taken and what a month of it costs are set out on a separate page: weight-loss medicines. That page explains what is on the shelf. It does not tell you which one is for you, because that is the assessment.
A capillary blood glucose check for you and for whoever came with you. A diet consultation. As long as the appointment needs, with the explanation repeated as many times as you want it. We do not charge more for a longer visit and we do not bill separately for the dietitian.

Where the assessment finds something outside this remit, you will be referred: cardiology within Caspian, and to a bariatric surgeon, a sleep physician, a psychiatrist or a gynaecologist outside it where that is what the picture needs.
Obesity is assessed and treated at Caspian Healthcare like any other long term condition. A consultation is ₹400 and includes a blood glucose check and a diet consultation.
