What it costs, and what insurance covers

Our fees are below in full. The honest headline on insurance is that no Indian health policy currently covers medicines for obesity, and it is better to know that now than in month three.

Fees are for consultation and clinical services at Caspian Healthcare. Laboratory tests are billed separately by our laboratory, Caspian Diagnostic Centre, at its listed rates. Any medicine you are prescribed is bought by you at the pharmacy of your choice, at its printed price. Caspian takes no margin on, and no payment from, any pharmaceutical company in relation to obesity treatment.

Included at no extra charge

A capillary blood glucose check for you and for whoever came with you. A diet consultation. As much time as the appointment needs, with the explanation repeated as often as you want it. We do not charge more for a longer consultation and we do not bill the dietitian separately.

Laboratory tests

Billed separately by our laboratory, Caspian Diagnostic Centre, in the same building, at its listed rates. The first visit panel is the largest, and after that most people need repeat tests at around month three and month six. Ask at the counter for the current price of the panel before it is drawn; nobody minds being asked and you should not have to guess.

Medicines

If a medicine is prescribed, you buy it yourself, at whichever pharmacy you choose, at its printed price. We do not sell it, we take no margin on it, and we take no payment from any pharmaceutical company in connection with obesity treatment.

What things cost varies enormously, by a factor of more than ten between the options that exist, and the prices have moved several times in the past year. Any figure printed on a website goes out of date quickly, and a number without the context of your assessment is not much use to you anyway. So this is a conversation for the consultation, where we can tell you what is appropriate for your situation, what each option would cost you every month, and for how long you would need it. Ask for that explicitly at the first visit. It is a completely reasonable thing to ask about before agreeing to anything, and it is one of the most important parts of the decision.

Before you decide: can you sustain it?

This tool deliberately asks nothing about which treatment. It asks the question that actually predicts whether treatment works, which is how long you can keep going.

Comfortably, not at a stretch. Include medicine, consultations and tests.

Insurance, plainly

WhatCovered?Detail
Medicines for obesityNoNo IRDAI-regulated policy currently covers them for weight management. Where the same medicine is prescribed for type 2 diabetes, a small number of policies with outpatient benefits may contribute. Check your specific policy rather than assuming either way.
Consultations and testsSometimesOnly if your policy has an outpatient or OPD benefit, or a corporate wellness wallet. Most individual policies in India do not.
Bariatric surgeryYesMandated for cover since an IRDAI circular in 2019, generally at BMI 40, or 35 with a qualifying comorbidity, with waiting periods of two to three years and exclusions for cosmetic indications.
Treating the complicationsUsuallyAdmission for a heart attack, a stroke, or diabetes complications is covered by any ordinary policy. This is the uncomfortable arithmetic of Indian health insurance: it pays for the consequences and not for preventing them.

Three things worth checking

The most expensive mistake in this field is starting a treatment you can afford for four months. You get the cost, then you get the regain, and you end up where you started with less money and more discouragement. Deciding what you can genuinely sustain, before you start, is the single most valuable thing you can do with this page.
