OVERVIEW

Not a printed sheet

Everyday Indian foods discussed during a diet consultation

Almost every clinic that treats diabetes will tell you diet matters and then hand you a printed sheet. Here the diet consultation is part of the visit, at no extra charge, because a plan you cannot follow is not a plan.

There are two of them and they cover between them from nine in the morning until ten at night, six days a week, so the plan is made with you on the same day rather than posted to you afterwards. Somebody seen at half past eight in the evening gets the same sitting as somebody seen at ten in the morning.

WHO YOU WILL SEE

Two nutritionists, thirteen hours a day

Farheen Begum holds an MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics from Anwarul Uloom and a BSc in Nutrition from Osmania University. She sits from 9 am to 6 pm.

Manzoor Tayaba holds an MSc in Nutrition and Dietetics from Anwarul Uloom and a BSc in Applied Nutrition and Public Health. She sits from 1 pm to 10 pm.

Both are Certified Diabetes and Obesity Educators, which is a qualification in teaching people to manage those two conditions rather than in prescribing for them. Both are off on Sundays and on public holidays.

WHAT HAPPENS

A conversation about what you actually eat

The rice, the rotis, the workplace canteen, the family cooking one meal for everyone, the Sunday biryani. The plan is built around that rather than around a food pyramid from somewhere else.

Not a list of foods to give up forever. You leave with something written down and a date to review it, because a plan that is never reviewed cannot be corrected.

WHO IT IS FOR

Where diet actually changes the outcome

  • Diabetes and prediabetes
  • Weight, whether you are losing it or trying to stop gaining it
  • Thyroid disease
  • Fatty liver
  • High cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Pregnancy and gestational diabetes
  • Children who are not eating, or eating only one thing
WHERE TO START

If you have never been here before

A body composition scan takes twenty minutes and costs ₹999. You stand on the machine, and then one of these two sits with you and goes through the report line by line: fat, muscle, visceral fat, and what each number means for you. You leave with the printout and a plan.

It is the easiest way to meet this department without booking a doctor first. A consultation with Dr. Khizer is booked separately, if and when you want one.

WHAT IT COSTS

Two ways to see them

₹400 for a diet consultation on its own. Nothing extra if you are already seeing a doctor here the same day: the diet consultation is included in that consultation fee.

FOR COLLEAGUES

What this department works from

The reference chapters our dieticians use are written for clinicians and published openly, because a colleague in another clinic needs the same thing. The first one covers diet in chronic kidney disease with diabetes, with Indian food values worked out per katori and per roti.

They assume clinical training and they are not patient information. If you are a patient, bring anything in them to your own doctor rather than acting on it.

SCOPE

What we do not do

We do not sell meal plans, supplements, detoxes, slimming packages or subscription programmes, and we will not put a number on the weight you are going to lose. Anyone promising you a specific figure is either guessing or selling.

BOOK

Seeing Farheen or Manzoor

Mon–Sat. Farheen sits 9 am to 6 pm and Manzoor sits 1 pm to 10 pm, so between them the department is open from nine in the morning until ten at night. Closed on Sundays and on public holidays. If you are booked with a doctor here on the same day, say so when you call and we will put the two together.

Need to see a doctor?

Tell us what you need and we will call you back, or ring us now. Someone answers at any hour, and if we are not the right place for your problem we will tell you that.
